Flying a Maine Coon kitten across Canada

August the Maine Coon at home

Most of our kittens leave Ontario by air, so the logistics are worth documenting. August flew to Halifax in the cabin with a flight nanny, which is the option we recommend whenever the receiving family cannot travel to collect in person.

Preparation starts two weeks out. The carrier lives open in the kitten room with a familiar blanket inside so it becomes a nap spot rather than a trap. Food is withheld for four hours before departure but water is not. The health certificate, vaccination record and microchip number travel in a sleeve taped to the carrier lid.

August landed in the early evening, spent his first night in a single closed room with a litter box, water and the same food he had been eating with us, and was exploring the rest of the house by the following afternoon. That one-room decompression step is the single most useful thing a new owner can do, and it costs nothing.
